Following the facelifted 2023 Nexon launch, Tata has launched the updated 2023 Nexon EV at a starting price of 14.74 lakh. The new Tata EV will be available in two versions, Long Range and Medium Range across six variants, Creative+, Fearless, Fearless+, Fearless+ S, Empowered and Empowered+. This is the electric SUV’s first facelift since it was launched back in December 2019. It follows the same design theme we witnessed in the updated 2023 Nexon, albeit with some EV-specific bits for differentiation.
The Nexon EV is a crucial product for Tata and a pioneer in terms of electrification. When EVs were a novel concept, the Nexon EV offered the benefits of an electric car to the Indian public at a competitive price point. In all fairness, the Nexon EV has been the game-changer when you factor in affordable long-range EVs in India.
Here’s everything you need to know about it:
Design
Modern Tata products seem to be in the right direction when it comes to design. The story continues to be the case for the Nexon EV. It is similar to the 2023 ICE-powered Nexon as it is the same car with an electric powertrain. The overall silhouette remains the same as the outgoing model, but there are some major styling updates that differentiate it from its predecessor.
For starters, both the front and rear bumpers get a makeover with sleek DRLs, and sharper lines. The biggest standout design feature of the Nexon EV is obviously the new DRL bar which runs all the way across the slim grille connecting both sides. It is also a functional feature as the light bar acts as a charging guide depicting charging progress when the car is plugged in. You also get a closed-off grille and a different bumper design to the ICE-powered Nexon. Moving to the rear, the connected X-shaped LED tail lamps are carried over from the new Nexon. Overall, in comparison to the previous generation model, the new Nexon EV has taken a contemporary design approach that is more likely to become a hit than a miss.
Interior
Similar to the new Nexon, we get a redesigned cabin that features some cool updates. To differentiate it from the 2023 ICE-powered Nexon, Tata has opted for a larger 12.3-inch floating touchscreen unit and different materials for the cabin.
There are also touch-sensitive switches, an all-digital cluster, another 10.2-inch instrument cluster with a navigation view, blind view monitor, new UI for the displays, and the talk of the town – the illuminating digital logo and the new 2-spoke steering wheel. Some key features include a wireless charger, a 9-speaker Harman sound system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, 6 airbags, 4 wheel disc brakes, panic brake alert and ambient lighting.
Powertrain Setup
The 2023 Tata Nexon EV is powered by a Gen 2 electric motor which is 20 percent lighter than the previous model. It is also smaller and has a reduced dependency on rare earth metals. Tata Motors has also deployed various advanced cooling techniques. Like before, there are two versions, the 40.5 kWh Long Range version and the 30kWh Medium Range version.
All of this results in output numbers of 143 HP and 215 Nm for the Nexon EV Long Range and 127 HP and 215 Nm for the Nexon EV Medium Range. The Long Range version can hit the 0-100 kmph sprint in 8.9 seconds with a top-speed of 150 kmph. Tata Motors have also increased the Nexon EV’s regenerative capabilities by 15 percent.
And a maximum range of 465 km for the long-range version and 325 km for the medium-range version. For some reference, the previous version was rated at 453 km in the Max variant (long range), and up to 312 km in the Prime (medium range). The 2023 Nexon EV also now supports Vehicle-to-vehicle charging and Vehicle-to-Load charging capabilities. The former enables you to charge another EV using your Nexon EV while the latter allows you to power external sources such as power tools, or even a small house.

More importantly, Tata’s wide spread of variants should provide more choice for buyers looking to make the shift from conventional ICE cars.
Summary
The Nexon EV is an important car for Tata. It represents Tata’s focus on expanding it’s EV lineup without compromising on the overall package of the cars. The fresh design and expanded feature list are key towards the Nexon EV continuing its run of success. While only the XUV400 offers any kind of competition, Honda’s EV based on the Elevate as well as Maruti and Toyota’s emphasis on strong hybrid technology poses a challenge that the Nexon EV is now better equipped to tackle.
