A naturally aspirated engine/ normal engine functions in the cycle of 4 strokes.
Intake– The air (diesel engine) or air-fuel mixture (petrol engine) is sucked into the cylinder as the piston goes down.
Compression– When the piston travels up, it compresses air or air-fuel mixture to high pressure.
Combustion (Power)– Either fuel is injected (diesel engine), or a spark plug ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture (petrol engine), generating a blast that throws the piston down again.
Exhaust– The burnt fuel turns into exhaust gases which are pumped out through the exhaust valve as the piston travels up again.
Then, the piston travels down again sucking air or air-fuel mixture, and the whole cycle keeps repeating. This is how a regular engine rotates the shaft (crankshaft) linked to the end of the piston which through a differential system rotates the wheels of your car.
How does a Turbocharger work?
A turbocharger consists of two elements, a turbine and a compressor which looks almost similar to the turbine. After the exhaust stroke, exhaust gases flow out of the combustion chamber with substantial pressure, they flow right into the turbine of the turbocharger and rotate it. Since the turbine is connected to the compressor with a shaft, the compressor also rotates. Due to rotation the compressor draws in the fresh air, compresses it and sends it to the intake serving the combustion chamber with pressurised compressed air. Intake of compressed air in the combustion chamber means better burning of fuel, consequently generating more power than usual and increasing fuel efficiency.
