Car sales in India continued to be dominated by hatchbacks, with six offerings from Maruti Suzuki India Limited among the top eight bestsellers in the segment. Take a look at the full list below –
1. Maruti Suzuki Swift: Maruti Swift dethroned Wagon R from the top spot in the hatchback category with sales of 20,264 units in February. The numbers marked a 5 percent dip versus January 2021 figures.
2. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: The Maruti Wagon R, which topped the hatchback charts last month, sold 14,669 units in February, slipping 22 percent from last year’s sales figures of 18,728. The new Wagon R was launched in February, and the vehicle’s revamped looks and additional features are expected to give a further leg up to Maruti’s long-time bestseller.
3. Maruti Suzuki Baleno: Jumping two spots in the segment from January, the current avatar of Maruti Baleno saw sales of 12,570 units. Its sales saw a fall of 37 percent from January 2021’s sales of 20,070 units. The 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which was launched on February 23, comes with a significantly revamped cabin and some promising new changes to the exterior and is expected to revive buyers’ interest in Maruti’s premium hatchback.
4. Maruti Suzuki Alto: With the fourth-highest sales overall in the hatchback segment, the Maruti Alto continues to be a steady performer for the manufacturer, selling 11,551 units in the month. But the volume-driver saw a sharp year-on-year fall of 32 percent in sales, a trend Maruti will hope to reverse with the launch of the revamped Alto lined up for release later this year. The 2022 Alto is expected to be based on the Celerio’s heartech platform, and will boast significant changes to its interiors and its exteriors.
5. Maruti Suzuki Celerio: Maruti Celerio came in at the sixth spot in the best-selling hatchback list, with 9,896 units sold in January, up 59 percent from the 6,214 units sold in the same period last year.
6. Hyundai i10 Grand: Helping Hyundai break into the top five was the Hyundai i10 Grand, with sales of 8,552 units in the second month of the year. The hatchback saw a fall of nearly 17 percent versus last January’s sales of 10,270 units.
7. Maruti Suzuki S Presso: With 8,140 units sold in February 2022, Maruti Suzuki S Presso pushed Hyunda’s i20 Elite a spot lower in the hatchback segment. The S Presso sold 7,040 units in the same period last year.
8. Hyndai i20 Elite: Hyundai’s second entry in the top 10, the i20 Elite sold 5,830 units in January – down 35 percent from January 2021’s sales of 9,001.
9. Tata Altroz: Tata Altroz sold 5011 units in February 2022, down 27 percent from the 6,832 units the vehicle sold in February 2021.
10. Tata Tiago: Rounding off the top hatchback list for the month of February is Tata Tiago, which sold 4,489 units in the month, down 34 percent from last February’s sales of 6,787 units.
