Right after the launch of the Suzuki e Vitara, Toyota has now taken the wraps off the new Urban Cruiser EV. The Urban Cruiser EV is the rebadged version of the eVitara and closely mirrors the design of the eVitara as well, with one key difference, it’s slightly more compact. For reference, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV and Suzuki e Vitara will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki India’s Gujarat plant. Initially, Maruti will launch the eVitara, followed by the introduction of Toyota’s Urban Cruiser EV. The SUVs will be marked as the first EV’s from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar. Let’s look at some key highlights and discuss more about this upcoming SUV in detail.
Highlights
- It gets some interesting tech features like ADAS, 10.25 inch digital instrumentation and a 360 degree camera
- Sports two battery packs – 49 kWh and 61 kWh
- The FWD offers 49kWh (106kW/143PS) and 61kWh (128kW/174PS) options, while the AWD comes with a 61kWh battery (135kW/183PS, 300Nm).
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV exterior design
The new Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is almost similar to the Suzuki e Vitara except a few key changes. The body is slightly smaller in length, and the fascia is not exactly similar to the concept design. The front is sharper, and the grille and headlamps are not as slim as seen in the concept. Most of the side profile remains the same as the Toyota Urban SUV concept, with black plastic cladding giving the body a rugged look. The car will also sport 18-inch and 19-inch aero optimised wheels with full cover. The blacked out ORVM’s and the hidden rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar are a nice touch that we also see in the Mahindra BE 6. Just like the fascia the rear also has a black panel holding the taillights, featuring square pixel-shaped LED elements which are slightly toned down from the concept version. The rear is the most similar area to the Suzuki eVitara except the Toyota logo prominently positioned on the tailgate.
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV interior design
The cabin of the Urban Cruiser EV is exactly similar to the e Vitara complete with the two-spoke steering wheel, dashboard layout and 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system. This infotainment system is nicely complimented by the 10.1 inch digital instrument console. The distinct feature of the interior is its black/grey theme. The rear has sliding seats to expand the legroom or bootspace according to the passengers convenience. Other features include an electronic parking brake, auto hold, auto climate control, wireless charging, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a JBL sound system, and a sunroof. The electric SUV will also come with a 360-degree camera and an ADAS suite of safety features comprising adaptive cruise control, pre-collision system, lane-departure alert, and lane-keeping assist. Expect to see six airbags as standard on the upcoming offering.
Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Powertrain
Not only the design, but even the skateboard platform is the same as the e Vitara. The Urban Cruiser EV will get 49kWh and 61kWh capacities. Urban Cruisers with the smaller battery will have a front axle-mounted 144hp, 189Nm motor, while those with the larger battery will power a 174hp, 189Nm front motor. There will also be an all-wheel-drive (AWD) model available with the larger battery, featuring an extra rear motor for better performance, giving it a combined power of 184 horsepower and 300Nm of torque. This AWD version will include features like hill descent control and a ‘Trail Mode’ for better handling on rough roads.
