Electric cars in India are quickly becoming the desired upgrade for many and car makers are announcing new EVs to cater to the emerging demand. Additionally, the popularity of Tata’s electric cars is prompting competitors to explore more affordable electric cars that deliver on buyer expectations. With the list of electric cars in India continues to grow, we look at the upcoming electric cars that will give buyers more options as they look to drive on clean energy.
Tata Altroz EV
Tata is already making waves in the market with Nexon EV. The electric Altroz might make a name for itself in the EV market with Tata’s competitive pricing. Altroz EV is rumored to have a powertrain like the Nexon which includes an IP67 certified 30.2 kWh battery pack with a permanent AC motor and a likely range of 250-300 km. It is expected to arrive towards the end of 2021 and will be approximately in the ₹12-14 lakhs price range.

Renault Kwid Electric
The French carmaker has understood the importance of the Indian car market and has made its mark in the hatchback category with Kwid. The electronic version is already in production and is being sold in China as K-ZE and is expected to launch in India in the last week of March. The exterior design will be on the same SUV lines and the price will be around ₹10 lakhs. The electric Kwid will have an estimated range of 200 km on a full charge and will compete with the EVs from Mahindra.
Tata Tiago EV
Tata’s pedigree for quality electric cars has been proven with the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. However, their asking price still leaves something to be desired for those looking to make he switch to electric on a budget. This is exactly the expectation that Tata wants to meet with the Tiago EV. It is expected that the upcoming electric hatchback will feature two battery pack options inherited from the Tigor EV.
The short range Tiago EV is expected to be equipped with the X-Press T systems that feature two battery pack options. The 16.5 kWh variant has a claimed range of 165 km while the 21.5kWh variant can travel up to a claimed 213 km on a single charge. The system that is most likely to feature on the electric hatchback is the Ziptron system that features a 26 kWh battery pack with a claimed range of up to 306 km. Price expectations for the Tiago EV target a sub-10 lakh price point.

BYD Atto 3
Chinese EV manufacturer BYD is gradually expanding their presence in India. The BYD E6 electric MUV was launched in 2021, exclusively for fleet operators and has opened bookings for private ownership in 2022. The next car buyers can expect is the BYD Atto 3 electric midsize SUV. The electric SUV is equipped with two battery packs. The short range 49.92 kWh battery has a claimed range of 320 km while the 60.48 kWh battery pack is claimed to cover 420 km on a single charge. Price is expected to be upwards of Rs. 20 lakh, competing against the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona.
Citroen C3 EV
French automaker Citroen has announced their intention to introduce their first electric car for India with the C3 EV. The upcoming electric hatchback will be based on the Citroen C3 hatchback that is currently on sale and will share a majority of the interior components. The C3 EV is expected to have a range under 400 km and priced around the Rs. 10 lakh price point. The electric car is expected to go on sale in 2023.

Mahindra Electric SUV range
After Tata, Mahindra is the next homegrown brand to announce a range of electric cars for their future lineup. A total of five electric SUVs have been announced by Mahindra, featuring three electric SUVs under their new electric-only BE sub-brand and two electric SUVs for their XUV line. Mahindra’s upcoming electric cars will be built on the INGLO platform, a dedicated electric skateboard platform. These new electric SUVs will start appearing from 2024 onwards.
