There are sedans and then there’s the Honda City. Since its debut in 1998, the Honda City has been the go-to choice for a reliable family car. The City has been through various iterations over the years and is still a key player in the sedan space. Despite the onslaught of SUVs, the Honda City has always carved a niche and found takers for it. A highly rated sedan that ranks high on comfort and practicality, there’s little to no fault with this Honda. However, ask any satisfied Honda City owner and they will all wish the sedan improved in some areas. So, here are the 3 common problems in a Honda City and how to get around them:
1. Low ground clearance leading to underbody scraping
The City is a low-slung sedan with a sleek bodyline. This has always been the case for all generations of Honda City, especially the first three generations. The latest version has come a long way, and is a taller sedan with better ground clearance. The low ground clearance leading to underbody scraping is the biggest problem for old Honda City owners. But there are some workarounds to this. Firstly, using tyres with a taller side profile helps increase the height of the sedan to an extent.
But make sure you stick to the manufacturer’s recommendation when it comes to upsizing. Another workaround to this is aftermarket coil-overs. Coil overs are stiffer springs+dampers from aftermarket brands that won’t compress as much as a stock suspension, which in turn reduces the scraping. Some of the expensive ones also come with height adjustments as well. That said, we do not recommend any spring assistors or spacers as these will alter how the car handles on the limit.
2. Weak horn and other electrical issues
This is a relatively minor issue as compared to the first one. Many cars from the factory come with a horn that has a mild tone. In a country like India, a good horn is a necessity to effortlessly navigate through frenzied traffic and the City lacks a good horn. However, you can get an aftermarket horn and get it fixed to your car, thereby solving this issue. You can get this done at any aftermarket shop. Make sure you use good wiring, and preferably a relay setup as well.
3. Airbag issue: Recall
Honda City cars manufactured between 2007 and 2013 are subjected to an official recall by Honda. The front airbags are manufactured by Takata which issued a recall as it found out that the airbags can be faulty. This is a free recall and all you have to do is take your City to a Honda-authorized service center and get it replaced, free of cost. However, your car might or might not be eligible for a replacement and this can only be checked by the dealership matching the VIN number. A total of 5,088 cars have been affected by this issue and out of this, 2099 units are Honda City sedans.
