A valid driver’s license is the most crucial document you will need in order to operate your preferred vehicle. A driver’s license serves as a proof that the holder is authorized to operate a vehicle legally. You also require a license in order to purchase a vehicle.

What are the types of driving licenses in Andhra Pradesh?

According to how long they are valid, there are two primary categories of driver’s licenses:

  1. Learner’s License (LL) – A learner’s license is a temporary license that indicates that the holder is still learning to drive and should not be allowed behind the wheel alone. Be careful to apply for the permanent licensing exam before your learner’s license expires because the license is only valid for six months.
  2. Permanent License (DL) – If you are confident in your driving abilities and have had your learner’s permit for at least a month, you can apply to take the test for a permanent driver’s license.

Looking at classifications based on the type of vehicle that the driver can operate, there are multiple options:

  1. Motorcycle Without Gear (MCWOG) – The motorcycle without gear license (MCWOG) allows its holder to drive and own two-wheeled vehicles, including mopeds and scooters.
  2. Motorcycle With Gear (MCWG) – A motorcycle with gear license (MCWG) ensures that the bearer is permitted to operate all vehicles covered by the MCWOG license in addition to motorcycles with gears.
  3. Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) – You must apply for a light motor vehicle license if you want to drive any car, jeep, or SUV in India for personal purposes. You must apply for an LMV-TR license if you wish to start operating a taxi.
  4. Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) – Pick-up trucks or tempos with a gross weight of 3500 kg are allowed to be driven by individuals with a light goods vehicle (LGV) license.
  5. Medium Goods Vehicle (MGV) – A person with a medium goods vehicle (MGV) license is allowed to drive trucks that can transport loads weighing between 3.5 and 12 tonnes.
  6. Medium Passenger Vehicles (MPV) –  Medium passenger vehicles include any type of public or private service vehicle, such as school buses.
  7. Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) – Vehicles with a carrying capacity of up to 32 tonnes may be driven by those who possess a heavy goods vehicle license (HGV).
  8. Heavy Passenger Vehicle (HPV) – A heavy passenger vehicle license is necessary to operate and drive both commercial and tourist buses.

Three additional special kinds of documents are available and can be requested by you:

  1. Invalid Carriage License – This license is only available to people with disabilities who need modified or customized cars in order to be able to drive safely.
  2. Transport Vehicle License – A transport vehicle license, as the name implies, is a legal document for cars that are used for transportation or as taxis.
  3. International Driving Permit (IDP) – An international driving permit (IDP) is given to Indian nationals who want to drive overseas. It is merely a permit that should be used in conjunction with a legitimate Indian license; it is not a license.
