How to Deactivate FASTag: Importance & Process

FASTag brought a revolution to traveling on Indian highways by introducing cashless payments at the tolls to reduce traffic jams while also making road travel as seamless as possible. While FASTag is a convenient system to use, when it comes time to deactivate the FASTag account, the process itself could be complicated to execute without guidance. Whether you’re selling your car, deactivating your FASTag account or changing to a different fastag issuer, it is vital to understand how to deactivate your fastag, why it is important and the process to follow for different fastag issuers.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is a wireless payment system that uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to provide the ability for cashless toll payments at toll booths on India’s highways. The tag is issued by a number of financial institutions, including banks. The car owner is required to link the tag with the car as well as a bank account or digital wallet.

Once linked, the car owner can simply drive through any FASTag-enabled toll booth and wirelessly pay the toll. This entire process takes seconds to complete, and the driver can return to their road trip with minimal inconvenience and hassle at the toll booth.

Why is it important to deactivate FASTag before selling your vehicle?

All FASTags are connected to your bank account or digital wallet. As such, it becomes important to deactivate your FASTag when you are selling your car. There are other reasons that make it important to deactivate your FASTag:

  • Financial Security: Deactivating the FASTag unlinks your bank account or digital wallet from the tag and prevents the new owner from using your FASTag account.
  • Smooth Transfer of Ownership: Along with the Registration Certificate, a deactivated FASTag will make it easier for the new owner to register a new FASTag for the car.

How to Deactivate your FASTag?

While there are multiple issuers in India that provide FASTag, the process to deactivate the account is similar for all issuers. You can choose one of three ways to close your FASTag account:

  • Call Customer Care:
    • If your FASTag has been issued by NHAI, you should call the NHAI Customer Service at 1033. Here you can request a cancellation of your FASTag.
    • For other FASTag issuers, you can call the customer care number using your registered mobile number and follow the steps to deactivate your FASTag account.
  • FASTag-linked Mobile Payment App: Log in to the mobile application of your FASTag issuer, bank or digital wallet, and follow the instructions to close your FASTag.
  • FASTag Portal of Issuing Bank: Log in to the online portal of the bank or digital wallet that issued the FASTag and choose the option to deactivate the account.
