Last updated 10 months ago

Competing with the Maruti Wagon R is still an ordeal for most cars in the segment. Yet the Tata Tiago has built a huge territory of its own and is the segment’s second best-selling car. Launched in 2016, the Tata Tiago drove the revival of the Indian carmaker and was the first Tata car with Tata’s IMPACT design language. With a strong structure that has earned a 4-star G-NCAP rating, the Tata Tiago is the safest car in its segment and carries an attractive value in the both new and used car market. In case you plan to sell your Tata Tiago, this article sheds light on some tips that will help fetch the best resale value.

Factors Affecting Tata Tiago Resale Value

The resale value of a Tata Tiago largely depends on several factors explained below.

Condition

Tata Tiago side

The condition of a car is the first checkpoint in deciding its resale value, and the Tata Tiago is no exception. More often than not, the value of a Tata Tiago can be determined by how it looks and feels. Make sure, your Tata Tiago doesn’t have any dents, abrasions, or other blemishes and all the electronics are in working condition. Also, a Tata Tiago with such issues, alludes that it might have met with accidents in the past, and this can prove to be a deal-breaker right at the onset.

Odometer Reading

The odometer reading of a used Tata Tiago is one of its key details, so much so that you won’t ever see a used car advertisement without the odometer reading. The odometer records every meter that a car covers, ultimately showing the total distance covered in any car’s lifetime. Thus, the higher the odometer reading is, the lower the car’s resale value. Moreover, as far as odometer reading is concerned, make sure you steer clear of odometer tampering. This can ruin the resale value of the Tata Tiago forever, and there is a strong possibility your car never gets sold.

Number of owners

Whether it’s Tata or any other brand, the number of ownership changes doesn’t spare any car in decreasing its resale value. The wear and tear of car’s components depend upon the way they have been used, and every owner has their own way of treating their car. With a single owner, a buyer can get clarity to a certain degree, however, with more than one owner it is harder to know how the car was used by the previous owners.  This is why, the more ownership changes, the lesser a Tata Tiago’s resale value. Generally, the first and second owners of a Tata Tiago receive a higher resale value, as compared to the later owners.

Model popularity

Tata launched the Tiago in 2016 and it received a 4-star G-NCAP rating in 2020. The Indian hatchback also received a facelift in 2020, receiving mechanical as well as some cosmetic changes. While the feature list remained the same, the facelifted Tata Tiago commands a higher resale value as compared to the pre-facelift model. Tata had also brought it the sportier version of Tata Tiago name Tata Tiago JTP, it was more powerful than the standard Tata Tiago and remained in production till June 2020. The Tata Tiago JTP is a rarer model and claims a good resale value for a well-maintained condition.

Age

Even if your Tata Tiago is perfectly maintained, its age always comes into consideration, when a buyer is examining it. The older the car, the lesser value it claims. For example, a 2018 model petrol-powered Tata Tiago XZ with manual transmission sells at around Rs 5 lakh, while the same variant of the 2019 year model gets around Rs 6 lakh.

Accidental Status

While minor accidents are almost unavoidable, major accidents greatly impact a car’s resale value. The robust construction of Tata Tiago can not save it from losing its resale value if it meets any major accident. The resale value of a car repaired after major accidents usually drops by 60 – 80%. Moreover, cars that have suffered major accidents are harder to sell, and are usually sold at throw-away prices.

Powertrains, Transmission, and Features

Tata Tiago dashboard

In ICE variants, the Tata Tiago comes with 1.2-litre Revotron three-cylinder petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. The petrol engine is also available with an optional factory-fitted CNG kit and this setup comes with only a 5-speed manual gearbox only. From April 2016 to January 2020, the Tata Tiago also featured a 1.05-litre diesel engine coupled with a manual transmission.

Since the diesel-powered Tata Tiago is not in production anymore, they are destined to get a lesser resale value than petrol-powered models. Moreover, in regions like Delhi, the maximum age  of diesel cars is 10 years and 15 years for petrol cars, after which these cars need to be scrapped. This further reduces the resale value of a diesel Tata Tiago in such cities.

All the same, do remember the diesel-powered Tata Tiago delivers better mileage than the petrol-powered model and this can help you get a good resale value for a diesel-powered Tata Tiago when selling outside the NCR region.

Moreover, since cars with automatic transmissions are higher priced as compared to cars with manual transmissions, an automatic Tata Tiago sells at a higher price than a manual Tata Tiago.

As far as features are concerned, the Tata Tiago hasn’t seen any changes since its launch and comes packed with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, projector headlights with LED DRLs, a rear defogger with wiper, an 8-speaker Harman sound system, automatic climate control, and a cooled glovebox. Of course, the higher variants come laden with more features as compared to lower variants, which help them get a relatively higher resale value.

Though the overall resale value of your Tata Tiago largely depends upon the aforementioned factors, here is the list of the expected resale value of the Tata Tiago according to its model year. Do remember, these prices vary following the vehicle’s overall condition.

Best Time to sell your Tata Tiago

A car loses 10% of its value right after leaving the showroom and another 10% as it finishes its first year. Then, with 10% cost depreciation every year, after 5 years the car is generally worth half of the original price paid for it. So, to claim the best resale value, make sure you sell your Tata Tiago within 5 years of its purchase.
