In India, a challan is an official paper issued to a motor vehicle driver who violates traffic rules and regulations. Issuance of a challan in your name implies you are liable to pay the penalty depending on the type of offence you made as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The conventional way of issuing a challan includes traffic police penning down the offence, penalty along with other required details on the challan form, and handing it over to the violator.
While the conventional procedure of issuing challan is still in force in many places, the age of digital India brought in the e-Challan system. An e-Challan is a computer-generated challan used by the Traffic Police and is being issued to all the traffic defaulters in India. For e-Challan, you have the options to pay via either cash or online payment methods. The e-Challan system also allows the traffic police to regulate the legal practice better, for instance, the CCTV cameras are located in specific locations on streets and roads, these cameras record real-time violations and transfer them to an automatic system that generates automatic e-Challans.
