Important Update: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has further extended the deadline for the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative until 31st March, 2024.
What is FASTag?
Gone are the days when toll plazas around the nation struggled with long queues and payment hassles. With the launch of the FASTag facility, toll collection and payment have truly revolutionised.
FASTag is a cashless payment system model under which toll tax amount is collected electronically via specialised tags called FASTags in a bid to save time and avoid long toll jams. The FASTag is operated by over 35 different banks in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India and the NHAI.
FASTags are linked to the subscriber’s prepaid account and are then affixed to their vehicle’s windshield. When passing through a Toll Plaza, the tag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to digitally transfer the Toll amount from the FASTag balance to the Toll Plaza. As per government norms, since 16th February 2021, all four-wheelers in India have to compulsorily get the tags fitted for toll payment.
What are the new FASTag regulations?
In a bid to make the electronic toll collection systems more efficient, and to provide hassle-free movement of vehicles at toll plazas, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), launched the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag” initiative on 15th January, intending to discourage the practice of using a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or the linking of multiple FASTags to a single vehicle. Under the initiative, the authority also urged users to complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) process for their FASTAgs as per the latest RBI guidelines, failing which active FASTags with valid balances will be deactivated. The authority also urged users to deactivate multiple FASTag issued by their banks and to keep only a single FASTag active, with proper KYC completed.
