After months of teasing, Mahindra has finally launched the all-new XUV 3XO, which comes in as the brand’s premium contender for the compact SUV segment. With an evolutionary exterior design, a premium cabin, a host of top-notch features and power-packed engines offered alongside impeccable safety onboard, the Mahindra XUV 3XO has attracted a lot of buyers in no time. Meant to take forward the legacy of the Mahindra XUV300, the Mahindra XUV 3XO has a lot of expectations, especially considering that the XUV300 was already a great blend of reliability, decent features, impressive performance and superb driving dynamics. But with the Mahindra XUV 3XO now in the picture, it would be fun to see whether the 3XO has truly taken things up a notch. Sharing the same pedigree, segment and pricing strategy, the 3XO aims to offer some fundamental differences, and that’s what we have tried to highlight in this article. So here is the newly launched Mahindra XUV 3XO pitched head-on against its predecessor, the XUV300.

Mahindra XUV 3XO vs Mahindra XUV300: Dimensions

CarMahindra XUV 3XO Mahindra XUV300
Length3990 mm3995 mm
Width1821 mm1821 mm
Height1647 mm1627 mm
Wheelbase2600 mm2600 mm
Boot Space364 litres257 litres
Ground Clearance201 mm180 mm

As far as dimensions go, the head-on comparison above makes it evident that both SUVs despite sharing the same segment and pedigree offer a rather distinct package that is a bit different from each other, even in terms of overall dimensions. Talking about the Mahindra XUV 3XO, the SUV comes with an evolutionary design that has a contemporary and modern touch to it, in line with Mahindra’s latest SUVs. When compared with the XUV300, the 3XO offers a stance that’s 20 mm higher, despite being 5 mm less wide. The higher stance gives the XUV 3XO a substantial increase in ground clearance which is 201 mm as compared to 180 mm on the XUV300. This results in better performance on uneven roads, and a much more stress-free driving experience. Another area where the 3XO shines is its large 364 litres of boot space, which makes the XUV300’s 257 litres of boot space a tough time.

Coming to the Mahindra XUV300, the SUV comes in with a classic, muscular and aggressive SUV look that has an assertive road presence. When compared, the XUV300 despite having lower boot space and ground clearance, still felt more mature, at least in terms of design. Nonetheless, even with the 3XO standing taller, both SUVs share the same 2600 mm of wheelbase and do not compromise on overall cabin space and comfort.

Overall, when compared head-on, both SUVs offer a balanced and compact stance that is bred for the city. While the XUV 3XO offers a modern, contemporary and evolutionary stance, the Mahindra XUV300 on the other hand, comes with a muscular, retro and classic SUV stance. In conclusion, however, the 3XO takes the lead here with its substantially better ground clearance and boot space, despite both SUVs offering the best in-segment wheelbase.

Overall winner: XUV 3XO for its practicality

16.5 km/l (Automatic)

One look at the engine comparison above and you’ll realise that both SUVs share the same engines albeit with a little tweaking here and there. Coming to the 1.2-litre mStallion Turbo Charged Multipoint Fuel Injection (TCMPFi) engine, the XUV 3XO offers 2 PS of extra power alongside a new and optimised 6-speed Torque Convertor Automatic onboard as compared to the 6-speed AMT that the XUV300 offers. This results in better mileage figures that are as high as 18.89 km/l for Manual and 17.96 km/l for the automatic transmission.

The 1.2-litre mStallion Turbo Charged Intercooled Gasoline Direct injection (TGDi) engine, on the other hand, is where the veteran XUV300 gets an edge by offering substantially better torque figures of up to 250 NM with its Transient Overboost Function, as compared to 230 NM of torque the 3XO offers without the Overboost onboard. This makes the XUV300 offer better driving dynamics, especially with its overboost function. Other than the torque, the 3XO shines again with better mileage of up to 20.1 km/l (Manual) and 18.2 km/l (Automatic) along with a better, improved 6-speed Torque Convertor Automatic as compared to the 6-speed AMT offered on the XUV300.

Overall, when considering the petrol versions of both SUVs, both SUVs offer similar performance, specifications and dynamics, with the 3XO doing better in terms of mileage along with a smarter and better automatic transmission onboard. Nonetheless, the XUV300 still impresses with its Transient Over Boost Function that the 3XO misses out on.

The comparison above shows that the 3XO offers the same 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine as offered by the Mahindra XUV300. However, what’s changed is the mileage figures that are slightly better onboard the 3XO, thanks to engine updates that make the 3XO better in terms of overall refinement.

But with that said, when it comes to the diesel engine, both SUVs are truly head-on with best-in-segment diesel engines that are power-packed, efficient and well-performing with both automatic and manual trims to choose from.

When it comes to safety there is no doubt that the Mahindra XUV300 offers all the basics that are needed for a safe and sound drive. This is evident from the SUV’s perfect 5-star GNCAP rating, which is tough to achieve by several competitors. However, when pitched against the XUV 3XO, the Mahindra XUV300 seems to miss out on the latest safety features.

With 6 airbags as standard along with additional safety features such as a tyre pressure monitoring system, the XUV 3XO shines high in the safety department. The cherry on the cake is the fact that the XUV 3XO comes with segment-first Level-2 Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) onboard, which offer advanced safety features such as:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Traffic Signal Identification

Thus, when compared head-on, the all-new Mahindra XUV 3XO is miles ahead of the Mahindra XUV300, thanks to the latest and greatest safety offerings onboard including Level-2 ADAS.
