Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
The biggest event on the latest sales chart is the Maruti Ertiga MUV emerging as the best-selling car in India. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise because the Ertiga has been consistently performing well of late and was the second-best-selling car in August. But an MUV taking the pole position among the best-selling cars is a rare feat. The Ertiga sold 17,441 units in September 2024 and saw a 29 percent growth in its year-on-year sales, the highest growth among the top ten cars on this list. For the longest time, the Ertiga has been the best-selling MUV in India and has defined what is expected of a favourite MUV according to Indian driving conditions. With ample space and comfort for seven passengers, the Ertiga delivers pocket-friendly mileage and is reasonably priced.
Powering the Ertiga is a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild hybrid technology. The transmission options available consist of a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic transmission. In terms of mileage, the Ertiga runs 20.51 km/l on petrol and 26.11 km/kg on CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Swift
‘Ground-breaking’ would be an understatement for the kind of success the Maruti Suzuki Swift has earned in India. In the game since 2005, the hatchback has been the face of an ideal hatchback for Indian preferences. It’s more spacious than all its rivals, packs enough comfort, and delivers a fantastic performance while delivering an appealing mileage. While all this makes the Swift a favourite family hatchback, its responsive handling and peppy engine keep it popular among driving enthusiasts. As far as sales are concerned, the Swift has always been one of the best-selling cars and it continued to dominate last month as well. Selling 16,241 units in September 2024, the Maruti Swift saw a 10 percent year-on-year growth and became the second-best-selling as well as the best-selling hatchback.
This Maruti Swift comes with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and 5-speed AMT. Moreover, it delivers a lucrative mileage of 24.8 km/l with MT, 25.75 km/l with AMT, and 32.85 km/kg with CNG.
Hyundai Creta
The best-selling SUV in India, Hyundai Creta, is also the best-ever-selling Hyundai car in India. With a long list of upmarket features, refined and reliable engines, and the trust of Hyundai, the Creta strikes the most desired balance in the mid-size SUV segment. Hence, the Korean SUV dominates this segment like no other and has become a benchmark for all other cars in its segment. Meanwhile, the Creta has been the only Hyundai car to break into the batch of the top 10 selling cars and so was the case last month. As per the latest record, the Creta sold 15,902 units in September 2024, registering a 25 percent year-on-year growth over the 12,717 units it sold in September 2023.
The Hyundai Creta comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. The NA engine and diesel engine are offered with a six-speed manual as standard while there is an option of a six-speed CVT automatic for the NA engine and a torque converter automatic for the diesel engine. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine comes with a 7-speed DCT automatic.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza
While the latest compact SUV, Maruti Fronx has turned out to be a great success, it’s the veteran Maruti Brezza, which is still the most formidable Maruti car in the compact SUV segment. For a significant while now, the Maruti Brezza has tightly held on to the position of the best-selling compact SUV and last month it did so by selling 15,322 units, gaining a 2 percent year-on-year growth. Considering the space for five passengers, comfort level of seats, and refinement and frugality of powertrains, the Brezza comes in as an appealing all-round package. Moreover, along with the trust that comes with the Maruti badge, the Brezza offers the strongest body as compared to all other Maruti cars.
Maruti offers the Brezza with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Moreover, with the mild-hybrid in all automatic variants, the Brezza returns a mileage of 17.38 – 19.8 km/l. Like most Maruti cars, the Brezza is available in CNG variants that return a mileage of 25.51 km/kg.
Mahindra Scorpio
One of the longest-running and most iconic cars in India, Mahindra Scorpio is one of a kind. Moreover, it is living proof that while comfort-oriented SUVs are in high demand, many buyers still put their money on conventionally designed, sturdy and durable SUVs. The undying love for Scorpio drove Mahindra to expand its line-up a couple of years ago. Today Mahindra sells two SUVs under the Scorpio badge. One is the evergreen Scorpio Classic and the other is the even more capable Scorpio N, which turned out to be a ground-breaking success. Last month, both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N collectively sold 14,438 units, gaining a 22 percent year-on-year growth.
As far as engines are concerned, the Scorpio Classic comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, the Scorpio N is powered by the same 2-litre diesel engine in two different tunes and a 2-litre turbo petrol engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, while the more powerful diesel engine and the petrol engine also get the option of a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
To a considerable extent, premium hatchbacks are a niche category and attract niche buyers. Yet, all its life, the Maruti Baleno has sold as well as some hatchbacks and SUVs that attract huge masses. Multiple times, the Baleno has emerged as the best-selling car and is acclaimed as one of the most successful Maruti cars. Its frugal and refined mechanicals, premium ride experience, elegant appearance, and most importantly, the tag of the number one carmaker have been the solid foundations of its grand success. All the same, lately the Baleno hasn’t been as popular as it used to be and this is largely due to ever-expanding SUV space eating into the niche category of the premium hatchbacks. Last month, the Baleno sold 14,292 units, registering a 22 percent year-on-year decline.
Sharing its engine with the Maruti Swift, the Baleno features the same 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT and is also available in CNG-powered variants. As far as mileage is concerned, the Baleno delivers 22.94 km/l from petrol and 30.61 km/kg from CNG.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx
Following the Baleno is the compact SUV spawned from it, the Maruti Fronx compact SUV. Combining the success formula of the Baleno with the coved SUV body type, the Fronx instantly connected with the masses after its launch last year. Today, the Fronx is selling well enough to be called one of the best-selling cars in India, and last month it grabbed a spot among the top ten by selling 13,874 units and registering 21 percent year-on-year growth. With such sales, the Fronx outsold its arch-rival, Tata Punch for the first time. Based on the Baleno, the Fronx carries similar interiors, features, and even most design elements. Moreover, its price does not differ much from that of the Baleno especially in lower variants, making it an extremely appealing Maruti compact SUV.
Maruti has equipped Fronx with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox comes with both engines, while there is a 5-speed AMT for NA engine and a 6-speed AT for turbo engine. Like most Maruti cars, the Fronx is also available in CNG variants that come with a 5-speed manual transmission and deliver a mileage of 28.51 km/kg.
Tata Punch
Selling 13,711 units in September 2024, the Tata Punch saw a 5 percent year-on-year growth and became the only Tata car to break into the top ten. While Tata Punch has been on a roll since day one in the market, its popularity has exponentially grown in recent times. The runaway success of the Tata Punch became the trailblazer for cars like the Exter and the Fronx. Its macho appeal, premium interiors, high-set seating, and high riding stance that replicate those of larger Tata SUVs, make the Punch an exceptional value-for-money offering. Moreover, the Punch has bagged a full 5 stars on the global NCAP safety test and is one of the safest cars in India.
What adds to Punch’s appeal is its versatility as it is available in petrol-powered, CNG-powered, and electric-powered variants. The ICE variants come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. While the CNG variants deliver a mileage of up to 26.99 km/kg, the EV variants are available with a 25 kWh battery and a 35 kWh battery that offer claimed ranges of up to 315 km and 421 km, respectively.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R at ninth number is another big surprise that the latest sales records presented. The popular hatchback sold 13,339 units in September 2024 and saw an 18 percent decline in its year-on-year sales. However, despite the decline, the Wagon R outsold all its rivals by a huge margin. Being the longest-running Maruti car in India, the Maruti Wagon R is one of the most tried and trusted cars. For decades, the Maruti Wagon R has been famous as a practical car to drive through city traffic thanks to its boxy silhouette, easy handling, and fuel-efficient powertrains. This is why the Maruti Wagon R is a popular choice for most urban buyers as well as commercial fleet operators.
Maruti has equipped Wagon R with two petrol units: a 1-litre petrol engine and a 1.2-litre petrol engine. While both engines are coupled with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT, an optional CNG kit is also available with the 1-litre engine, which comes with only manual Transmission. The Maruti Wagon R delivers a mileage of 25.19 km/l from petrol and 34.05 km/kg from CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Eeco
The most affordable MUV in India, Maruti Eeco is the most special car on this list and essential for the Indian market. Used primarily for business needs, the Maruti Eeco is the go-to car for a wide variety of commercial tasks such as ambulance services, public transportation, and cargo delivery. The Maruti Eeco has successfully handled these businesses for more than ten years, making itself one of the best-selling cars. In September 2024, the Maruti Eeco made an appearance on the list with sales of 11,908 units which translated into a slight 7 percent year-over-year growth.
The Maruti Eeco is available in both 5- and 7-seater configurations and comes equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. In terms of mileage, the Eeco delivers 19.71 km/l from petrol and 26.78 km/kg from CNG.
