The 12-year old Volkswagen Polo will cease its production in India, with the model facing dwindling sales and stiff competition, and becoming increasingly outdated over the years. . Volkswagen launched the Polo way back in the year 2010 and was also its first product to be locally produced in India at Volkswagen’s plant in Chakan, Maharashtra.
Volkswagen will halt the production of both the Polo and the Vento in the second quarter of 2022; however, there is a slight possibility that Volkswagen might bring the global sixth generation Polo to India with heavy modifications to comply with India’s sub-4-meter tax norms. At present, there are no replacements planned for the Polo.
The upcoming Volkswagen sedan Virtus will be rolled out as a replacement for the Vento and will see local production along with the SUV Taigun.
The current 5th-generation Polo has stretched its stay in India for a while now, even as global markets witnessed the launch of the sixth-gen Polo in 2018. The 5th-gen Polo in India features two powertrains – a 1.0 litre NA petrol with 75 hp and 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol with 109 hp.
