While Tata expands its EV range with new cars, Mahindra has so far been silent on their electric vehicle range in India. Mahindra has now created some buzz about their electric future and has teased its three new Mahindra EVs concepts which include an electric compact SUV, an electric mid-size SUV, and an electric SUV coupe. This teaser is a taste of things to come as Mahindra plans to add eight EVs to its portfolio by 2027, and four of these cars will be the electric versions of Mahindra’s ICE-powered cars. Here’s what Mahindra has revealed so far:
- An all-new EV platform: Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture (MESMA)
- The Mahindra eXUV300 and eKUV100 spotted testing on Indian roads
- Mahindra XUV300 EV expected to come with two battery options
Although the teaser video has only highlighted a few details, the body appears to be highly futuristic with sharp angles visible on the nose. The C-shaped LED signature in the front and rear look highly elegant and modern, and add to the futuristic design of these new Mahindra electric cars. Moreover, the SUV coupe and mid-size SUV briefly shown in the teaser are likely to be the electric XUV900 coupe and the electric XUV700 respectively, while the third seems like an all-new model.
The aforementioned EVs have been designed by Mahindra’s dedicated design centre in Coventry, U.K, named Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (M.A.D.E). This design centre is tasked to develop the best possible designs with a futuristic vision in order to provide Mahindra a winning edge over its rivals.
New Mahindra EV Platform
The ‘Born Electric Vision’ seems to be a clear reference to an all-new dedicated EV platform: Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture (MESMA) which is compatible for the battery size of up to 80 kW and dual or single-motor setup with electric motors from 60 kW to 280 kW output. This is a made in India platform suitable for modifying any existing ICE vehicle to an EV, as well as for making a whole new one.
Mahindra EVs spotted testing
Mahindra is already testing the XUV300 EV and eKUV100 on Indian roads. While the eXUV300 is expected to be launched by the third or fourth quarter of FY 2022-23, the eKUV100 is expected to be launched by the end of this year. Furthermore, the XUV300 EV is expected to be offered in two battery sizes with driving ranges of 200 km and 375 km respectively. The XUV300 EV will rival the Tata Nexon EV which is also expected to receive an update with a bigger battery pack and extended driving range. To keep the Mahindra XUV300 EV distinguishable from its ICE variant, Mahindra will add blue accents as shown in its concept.
