Mahindra and Mahindra achieved its first Indian Car Of The Year (ICOTY) award for the year 2022, and the car that did it for the manufacturer is the all-new Mahindra XUV700. The XUV700 was up against a formidable list of competitors in the top category, including the Citroen C5 Aircross, Force Gurkha, Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger among others.

Mercedes Benz S-Class notched the Premium Car Award, while the Audi E Tron won in the Green Car Award category for the year.

The ICOTY award is given to cars that come out on the top for having value for money, reliability, design, tech innovation, fuel efficiency, driving appeal and suitability for the Indian market. The results are decided by a 17-member jury comprising editors and journalists who have covered the automotive industry for a considerable length of time.

M&M Automobile Division CEO Mr Vijay Nakra said, “We would like to thank the ICOTY 2022 jury for conferring this honour. It is a ringing endorsement for the global standards of design, product development, engineering, manufacturing, and quality that has been put in creating this world-class product, in line with our Honorable Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. It recognizes our continued focus on delivering a strong customer value proposition through innovative and category disrupting products.”

To enroll for ICOTY awards a car has to be entirely a new model, facelifted cars do not qualify for selection. Another parameter for selection is that cars have to be manufactured or assembled in India and be on sale before November 30 of the previous year. Cars imported through the CBU route are not selected.

How do cars become ICOTY?

A car becomes an ICOTY through a voting system. Jury members on the auto expert panel have a maximum of 25 points, of which they can allot a maximum of 10 points to one car, following which every jury member must also give points to at least 5 of the contending cars.
