The Jeep Compass and the MG Hector are two popular SUVs in India today. The Compass came at a time when compact SUVs weren’t really a huge market, and can be credited for igniting the segment in India. The Compass also started Jeep’s India chapter and is currently the best-selling model for the American SUV giant. Right after its debut, the Compass found many takers who were impressed by the Jeep brand image and build quality and continued to be a sales hit until other brands forayed into the segment.

Similar to the Compass, the Hector established MG in the Indian market and is one of the brand’s best-sellers. In the MG Hector vs Jeep Compass comparison, the two SUVs do seem to have a lot in common. But, while both SUVs are powered by the same diesel engine, they differ starkly in their pricing. However, that doesn’t mean they are any less of rivals. So, to understand their similarities and differences better, we compare the MG Hector and the Jeep Compass on paper:

Size and road presence are one of the main talking points of the MG Hector and it continues to be the case in this comparison. Be it length, width, height, or wheelbase, the MG outshines the Jeep Compass by a good margin. The Hector actually looks like a car from a different segment when pitched against the Compass. The MG also offers substantially more boot space and ground clearance. Thus, the superiority of the Hector is apparent across all parameters, making it a clear winner in terms of dimensions, size and road presence.

Both the Hector and Compass offer the option of a Turbo petrol engine mated to an automatic gearbox. Looking at the numbers, the Jeep’s MultiAir petrol engine produced 20 bhp more at 160 bhp as opposed to the 1.5-litre turbo petrol of the Hector which produces 141 bhp. That said, both these engines deliver identical peak torque at 250Nm making them potent enough. As for the gearbox options, the Hector makes use of an 8-speed CVT, while the Compass uses a far more superior 7-speed DCT.

Moving on to the diesel engine, there is not much to compare here. Why? Because both the Hector and the Compass use the same Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine. However, the Jeep, being under the Fiat marque, has complete authority over the engine, while MG, like many other carmakers in India, purchases the engine from Fiat. This is one of the best diesel engines in India, offering ample performance and reliability, which is why it is the go-to choice for many.  The fact that it is BS6-ready also adds to it. Both SUVs deliver an identical 170bhp/350Nm of twist, and utilize a 6-speed manual gearbox. One notable difference is that the Jeep offers the Compass diesel with an automatic gearbox, while MG currently does not.

In terms of features, both the Jeep Compass and the MG Hector offer the best kit you expect in an SUV of this stature. However, the Hector takes the lead when it comes to tech on offer, boasting a massive 15-inch touchscreen unit, which is larger than the 10.1-inch system offered by the Jeep. The Hector also features a host of connected tech along with a full ADAS suite. In comparison, the Jeep also offers a host of connected tech but misses out on a full ADAS setup.

While features and tech are MG’s forte,  the Compass is not too far behind and is actually a well-loaded SUV. Some highlights include an Alpine sound system, 8-way powered seats with memory function, and a fully digital 10.2-inch instrument cluster.

The Jeep Compass is a global product which has been tested by Euro Ncap, one of the most highly regarded safety organisations. It scored an impressive 5 out of 5 stars showcasing how safe it is. The MG Hector is yet to be tested and hence when it comes to safety ratings, the Jeep Compass is the clear winner. When it comes to safety features, both SUVs offer the same level of kit although MG has the ADAS up its sleeve. However, with the Jeep scoring 5 stars, we can’t help but recommend it when it comes to outright occupant safety and crashworthiness.

Well, this is where things get serious in this comparison. You see, the Jeep Compass is clearly a segment above when it comes to pricing. It is easily Rs. 5 lakh more expensive than the MG Hector no matter which variant you pick. That is a huge sum, equivalent to an entry-level car today. And to make things worse, the range-topping version of the Jeep Compass is a full Rs. 10 lakh more expensive than the MG Hector’s top-spec variant.

For reference, with the same money as a top-spec Jeep Compass, you can buy a top-spec MG Hector and have spare cash in hand to almost get a base Hector. The Jeep’s range-topping variant is the hardcore Trailhawk and that explains the exorbitant price tag. Nevertheless, there is no escaping the fact that the Jeep is a premium SUV, unlike the Hector which is more of a budget offering.

Summary

The MG Hector is the SUV to pick if you prioritise size, road presence, and features. But, the real reason to suggest the Hector is the glaring price difference between the two. If you want an SUV that does everything the Jeep Compass does minus the off-road capability and premium feel, the MG is a good option and a full Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh cheaper! Plus, it is bigger, more spacious, has the biggest boot, and packs in the most number of features.

That said, if you want no compromises when it comes to a luxury SUV that offers a premium experience, the Jeep ranks high. For that extra money, you get an SUV that drives and handles much better and has a cabin that reeks of quality and richness. The Compass offers the best fuel economy and also comes with better drivetrain options and an AWD system that makes the Compass capable off-road as well. It’s also safe to say the Jeep Compass is a driver’s car with dynamics that can keep you entertained over a long time.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you’re looking for in an SUV. However, it’s hard to ignore the massive price difference between both these SUVs, and that is likely to influence the final purchase decision.
