With the increasing fuel prices and the need for sustainability, Tata has become the third brand in India to add factory-fitted CNG variants in its offerings. Tata Tiago CNG variants and Tata Tigor CNG variants will soon go on sale and are the first ones of many CNG-powered cars expected from Tata. Moreover, both cars are claimed to deliver a mileage of 26.49 km/kg. As Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have dominated the CNG-powered segment so far, Tiago & Tigor CNG variants will bring a much-needed and competitive change of pace.

Tata Motors is offering CNG models on three variants of the Tiago. Unlike the Tata Tiago petrol model, the CNG model will be offered with the XM variant. As is evident, the CNG models of the Tiago will be more expensive than the petrol models by ₹90,000. This higher cost should be absorbed with the lower price of CNG fuel.

Design & Features

In both Tata Tiago CNG and Tata Tigor CNG, there are no design differences from their petrol versions, except the i-CNG badge on the tailgates of both cars. Due to the increased weight of around 100 kgs, the ground clearance of Tata Tigor has dropped from 170 mm to 165 mm, while the Tata Tiago retains its ground clearance of 168 mm. A more considerable change is on the inside as the Tata Tiago boot space has dropped from 242L to 80L and the Tata Tigor boot space has dropped from 419L to 205L.Tata Tiago CNG

The feature list has been carried forward from the petrol variants. As such the top Tiago CNG variants will come equipped with 14-inch wheels, projector headlamps with LED DRLS, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eight-speaker Harman audio system, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, electric wing mirrors, etc. The top Tata Tigor CNG variant additionally features rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, and a dual-tone roof option.

The safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera and sensors, and corner stability control. It’s worth noting, both petrol-powered Tata Tigor and Tata Tiago have scored 4-Star in the global NCAP safety test. In addition to that, while CNG-powered variants haven’t been tested by G-NCAP, a similar level of safety can be expected from them.

Tata Tiago CNG & Tata Tigor CNG Powertrains

Both the Tata Tiago CNG and Tata Tigor CNG are powered by the 1.2L petrol engine. The CNG variants will deliver 74 PS power and 95 Nm of peak torque, lower power figures than the petrol variants that produce 87 PS and 113 Nm of torque. Along with the 5-speed manual transmission in both Tata CNG cars, these cars can be directly started in CNG mode, a segment first feature. The Tata pair claim to deliver a mileage of 26.49 km/kg, which does fall short of the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Celerio’s 35.60 km/kg. It’s worth noting, with the availability of the Tata Tigor EV, the Tata Tigor is the only car in India to be offered in petrol, CNG, and electric variants.

Tata Tiago CNG & Tata Tigor CNG Rivals

As aforementioned, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have dominated the CNG segment so far. This means, the Tata Tiago will rival Hyundai Santro CNG, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG, Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG, and the Tata Tigor will compete with Hyundai Aura CNG.
