Tata Motors pioneered the affordable EV space in India with the Nexon EV which also happens to be the best-selling EV in the country. Tata followed this up with the Tiago and Tigor EV as well. The carmaker jumped on the EV bandwagon faster than its competitors and is gearing up to launch its next all-electric offering – Tata Punch EV. The compact SUV will make its debut at the 2023 Auto Expo and here’s everything you need to know about it.
Tata Punch EV: Platform
The Punch EV will be based on the new Sigma architecture which is a revamped version of the ALFA platform. What this means is that the Punch EV will get a dedicated platform to support the all-electric setup. The Sigma architecture features modifications such as the omission of the central transmission tunnel and the fuel tank to open up more space for a battery pack. Since the Punch EV gets a distinct chassis from its ICE counterpart, the all-electric SUV will be a complete product that will differ from its normal version significantly in terms of chassis and mechanics.
Tata Punch EV: Motor and battery
The Punch EV is expected to borrow the same Ziptron powertrain setup from the Nexon EV. A permanent magnet synchronous motor will be used to send power to the front wheels. Specifics of the battery pack and the motor are still in the dark but expect it to pack enough numbers to help it slot in between the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. There is also a high chance that Tata might offer different versions such as medium and long range for the Punch EV. This will also help the carmaker price the SUV competitively.
Tata Punch EV: Exterior changes
Similar to the Nexon EV, the Punch will also get an ‘electric’ aesthetic package which may include revised bumpers, grille, blue color accents, and alloy wheels. The mini SUV will also get some differentiation inside the cabin in the form of richer materials and different upholstery. Apart from this, the Punch EV might also gain some feature additions such as regenerative braking, connected car features, leatherette seats, and drive modes.
Tata Punch EV: Expected price
The Punch will be an important EV in Tata’s portfolio of all-electric cars. It will essentially bridge the gap between the Tiago/Tigor and the Nexon EV. The Punch EV is expected to be priced between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 16 lakh.
The Punch EV will make its grand debut at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023 while it is slated for launch by September 2023. It will be a crucial car for the Indian market and the first mini-SUV to get an all-electric powertrain. When launched, the all-electric SUV will rival the upcoming Citroen eC3.
