It’s the season of SUVs and Tata Motors is set to add to the long list of SUVs you can choose from this festive season. Tata has launched its latest compact SUV, the Tata Punch, and is positioned as an affordable compact SUV designed for the city.
What is the Tata Punch?
After the successes of the Tata Harrier and Safari, a compact SUV from Tata has been expected since the car maker previewed the HBX concept at the Auto Expo. Tata unveiled its newest launch as the Tata Punch and has gradually released details ahead of its full launch.
Exteriors
The Tata Punch will be based on Tata’s ALFA-ARC platform that also underpins the Tata Altroz. It can be expected that the Punch will be inheriting similar safety characteristics as the Altroz. In terms of design, the Punch takes after its larger SUV siblings, the Harrier and Safari.
The front of the Punch features Tata’s signature split headlamp design while the squared wheel arches add to the rugged aesthetics of this compact SUV. The Punch has several muscular design accents and lower part of the car is covered in plastic cladding for a more SUV-like design. The dual tone colour options further add to the car’s desirability as an urban SUV.
Interiors
Tata is looking to capture the same youthful energy as the Tiago and offering colourful accents around the vents. The MID will be a semi-digital unit, similar to the one featured on the Tata Altroz. The touchscreen infotainment display will also be the same as the Altroz and will be a 7-inch display. Along with the push start button, there are steering-mounted controls, providing easier navigation while driving.
Engine
The Tata Punch is expected to feature a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine is rumoured to produce 83 PS of power with the Punch also expected to feature driving modes for city and eco-driving. Much like the Altroz, Tata will launch an AMT variant and a turbo-petrol model at a later date.

Tata Punch: Which Variant to Buy?
If you are looking for a decently feature-packed car, then the Tata Punch Accomplished variant with the Dazzle Pack is the variant to consider. While you do miss out on the automatic headlamps, wipers and climate control from the Creative variant, the Accomplished variant delivers an all-round pleasant driving experience. While the Punch Creative offers all the bells and whistles, it will start encroaching on the base variant price of the Tata Nexon, which offers more space and a more powerful engine over the Punch.
Tata Punch Competitors
The Tata Punch will slot into the emergent micro-SUV segment that essentially includes hatchbacks with higher ground clearance and SUV-styling elements. At present the Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be a direct competitor, with the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and Renault Kwid being more entry-level offerings in this segment. The recently announced Citroen C3 will also compete in the same space as the Tata Punch while Hyundai is also expected to launch the Casper in India in 2022.
