- Wagon R rules the hatchback charts; up 18% YoY; Swift comes second
- Hyundai i10 Grand and i20 Elite among top six hatchbacks of January
- Maruti’s domination of the segment continues unchallenged
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R: Sitting unchallenged at the top of this list is the Maruti Wagon R, selling 20,334 units in the month, witnessing an 18 percent jump over the same period last year.
Maruti Suzuki Swift: Close at the heels of the Wagon R – and also from the Maruti bandwagon – is the Maruti Swift. The nifty hatchback clocked sales of 19,108, falling just short of the Wagon R, and registering an impressive 11 percent growth over January 2021.
Maruti Suzuki Alto: With the third-highest sales overall in the hatchback segment, the Maruti Alto continues to be a steady performer for the manufacturer, selling 12,342 units in the month. But the volume-driver saw a sharp year-on-year fall of 32 percent in sales, a trend Maruti will hope to reverse with the launch of the revamped Alto lined up for release later this year. The 2022 Alto is expected to be based on the Celerio’s heartect platform, and will boast significant changes to its interiors and its exteriors.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio: Maruti Celerio came in at the fourth spot in the best-selling hatchback list, with 8,279 units sold in January, up 19 percent from the 6,963 units sold in the same period last year.
Hyundai i10 Grand: Helping Hyundai break into the top five was the Hyundai i10 Grand, with sales of 6,841 units in the first month of the year. The hatchback saw a fall of nearly 40 percent versus last January’s sales of 10,865 units.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno: While all eyes are now set on the 2022 Maruti Baleno’s reported launch on February 24, the current avatar of Maruti Baleno saw sales of 6,791 units, down nearly 60 percent from January 2021. The new Baleno will come with a revamped cabin and some promising new changes to the exterior.
Hyundai i20 Elite: Hyundai’s second entry in the top 10, the i20 Elite sold 6,505 units in January – down 24 percent from January 2021’s sales of 8,505.
