Indians have always been big on SUVs, making them tower over all other body types in terms of popularity as well as demand. While compact SUVs have captured a huge part of the Indian automobile space, they have not been able to fill the demand for larger SUVs. Every month, we see many SUVs selling in more numbers than compact SUVs, despite the former being considerably pricier than the latter. Continuing their strong performance in March 2025, SUVs once again sold in huge numbers. Here are the best-selling SUVs of March 2025, excluding the best-selling compact SUVs.

Hyundai Creta

For almost a decade, the Hyundai Creta has been the face of modern mid-size SUVs in India. Its grand success attracted many carmakers and is part of the reason why this is the most in-demand segment in India. As the best-selling Hyundai car and the best-selling mid-size SUV, Creta is a brand in itself, and its recent facelift upped the ante even more. In March 2025, the Creta once again took the pole position in the SUV space, selling 18,059 units that helped it grow its year-on-year performance by 10 percent. Competing in the most crowded segment, the Creta comes in as the most attractive overall package for its refined engines, premium cabin, and a host of upmarket features. Moreover, Hyundai has recently launched the Hyundai Creta N Line, which is its sportier version and is expected to add great volumes to its sales.
As far as engines are concerned, the Creta offers a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and an iVT automatic transmission and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Moreover, there is a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, which it shares with the Kia Seltos, Kia Carens, Hyundai Alcazar, Hyundai Verna, and the recent entrant, Hyundai Creta N Line. While the Creta offers this engine with only a 7-speed DCT automatic, the Creta N Line offers it with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed DCT automatic.

Mahindra Scorpio

One of the longest-running and most iconic cars in India, the Mahindra Scorpio is one of a kind. Moreover, it is living proof that while comfort-oriented SUVs are in high demand, many buyers still put their money on conventionally designed, sturdy and durable SUVs. The undying love for Scorpio drove Mahindra to expand its lineup a couple of years ago. Today, Mahindra sells two SUVs under the Scorpio badge. One is the evergreen Scorpio Classic, and the other is the even more capable Scorpio N, which turned out to be a ground-breaking success. In March 2025, both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N collectively sold 13,913 units, and while this translated into an 8 percent year-on-year decline, the Scorpio finished as the second-best-selling SUV.
As far as engines are concerned, the Scorpio Classic comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, the Scorpio N is powered by the same 2-litre diesel engine in two different tunes and a 2-litre turbo petrol engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, while the more powerful diesel engine and the petrol engine also get the option of a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

In India, mileage generally comes before other aspects when an average buyer looks for a car. This is where Maruti has been dominating for decades, and its ace card is working wonders among the mid-size SUVs as well. Today, with up to 27.97 km/l mileage, the Maruti Grand Vitara is the strongest rival of the Hyundai Creta and one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale. Along with supreme mileage, the SUV offers a refined drive and meets most requirements of an average SUV buyer. In January 2025, the Grand Vitara raked in sales of 10,418 units, seeing a 7 percent decline in year-on-year sales.
The Grand Vitara is available with two engine options. A 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine mated with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. And a 1.5-litre petrol strong-hybrid engine paired with an e-CVT automatic. The CNG variants come with a 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox and deliver a mileage of 26.6 km/kg.
Mahindra Bolero

In the rural Indian landscape, where adversities from the surface are the highest, the Mahindra Bolero has been ruling the roost for decades. With sky-high popularity and no competition, this rustic automobile is almost essential in rural India. Following what it did in the case of Scorpio, Mahindra has expanded the Bolero’s line-up. Today, the Bolero family consists of three cars. One is the standard 7-seater Bolero that has been in business since 2000. Second is the 7-seater Mahindra Bolero Neo, which hits the middle point between ruggedness and a premium ride. Third is the Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus, which is the 9-seater version of the Bolero Neo. In March 2025, all three models collectively sold 8,031 units, seeing a 22 percent decline in year-on-year sales.
The standard Bolero and Bolero Neo come with a 1.5-litre diesel engine mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. Meanwhile, the Bolero Neo Plus comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine mated with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Mahindra XUV700

In recent years, the Mahindra XUV700 has been one of the most sensational entries in the car market, and its instant success has revolutionised the SUV game across the board. Whether it is power-packed performance, ride comfort, or features, the XUV700 has it all covered to deliver a stellar value for your money. What augments its value is its 5-star G-NCAP rate body, which makes it one of the safest cars in India. By all means, this 5, 6, & 7-seater Indian SUV is the best all-rounder under Rs 30 lakh and a more than deserving car to be called one of the best-selling SUVs. In March 2025, the sales of 6,851 units helped the XUV700 see a 4 percent growth over its sales in the same month of 2024.
Mahindra has equipped the XUV700 with two powerful engines: a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. On the higher end of the variant lineup, the XUV700 offers an optional all-wheel drive with a diesel automatic powertrain.
Kia Seltos

The first impression is the last impression in many cases, and being Kia’s first car in India, the Kia Seltos did an excellent job of introducing Indians to the Korean carmaker. It was lapped up in a way that it managed to outshine its Hyundai Creta for a few months, and this feat has never been achieved by all other cars in the segment. Today, when the Seltos is not at the peak of its popularity, it is still pulling significant volumes. In March 2025, the Seltos raked in sales of 6,525 units, which translated into an 18 percent year-on-year decline. Nonetheless, the Seltos is a peach of a mid-size SUV. Much like its sibling Creta, the Seltos offers a lot of upmarket features, refined engines, and invaluable dependability.
The Kia Seltos comes with three engine offerings: a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT, a 1.5-litre diesel engine mated to either a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or a 6-speed torque converter automatic, and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with either a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT automatic.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

Being Toyota’s version of the Maruti Grand Vitara, the Toyota Hyryder adds the Japanese manufacturer’s reputation to an already capable product. Sharing its powertrains with the Grand Vitara, the Hyryder also offers a mileage of up to 27.97 km/l with its strong-hybrid engine and, therefore, is one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India. In the last few years, the demand for the Hyryder has increased considerably. In March 2025, the Japanese mid-size SUV collected sales of 5,286 units, and despite the 11 percent decline in year-on-year sales, it comfortably managed to bag a spot among the top selling SUVs.
Tata Curvv

In true Tata fashion, the Indian carmaker has once again done something mould-breaking and recently launched a stunning mass-market coupe SUV, Tata Curvv. The Tata Curvv is on sale in both ICE and EV avatars and is here to take on the likes of mid-size SUVs. Being a coupe SUV, the Curvv is a fresh and spellbinding car for most buyers. To challenge cars like the Hyundai Creta, the Curvv packs a lot of features and offers a segment-leading ride comfort. It’s also one of the safest cars in India, as it has scored a full 5-star rating in the Bharat NCAP safety test. As far as sales are concerned, the Curvv is doing significantly well as of now, but it can also be the first-mover advantage. In March 2025, the Curvv grabbed a spot on the list of best-selling SUVs, with sales of 3,785 units.
Powering the Tata Curvv are three engines: a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine, and a 1.2-litre T-GDi engine. All engines come mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DCA. Whereas, the Tata Curvv EV is available with two battery packs, 44 kWh and 55 kWh, which offer a range of 502 km and 585 km, respectively.
Toyota Fortuner

At a price tag that is nearly twice as expensive compared to that of the other cars on this list, the Toyota Fortuner is the most prominent car on this list. The prominence of the Fortuner is not limited to this list; as a matter of fact, it is acclaimed as the king of SUVs in India. What earned the Fortuner this title is its ability to cross the most challenging terrains, the ample space it has for all seven passengers, and, most importantly, its statesman appeal that has made it a favourite of elites. With such an unmatchable status, the Fortuner sells more units than all its rivals combined every month. Last month, the Toyota Fortuner sold 3,392 units, and despite seeing a 6 percent decline in its year-on-year sales, the SUV towered over all rivals by a huge gap.
Powering the Fortuner are two mighty engines: a 2.7-litre petrol engine and a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. The petrol engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, and the diesel engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Both engines are also available with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, while the diesel engine also gets an optional 4-wheel drivetrain.
Honda Elevate

While Honda is no longer as popular as it once was, offerings like the Honda Elevate prove that the Japanese carmaker still has faith in its core tenets. Based on the iconic Honda City, the Honda Elevate has unparalleled comfort levels and reliability and delivers where it matters the most. For example, while it cannot be called a feature-rich SUV, it offers all the modern-day essentials and robust safety. Moreover, it is powered by the legendary 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, which has proven its mettle for an unmatched all-round performance. As far as sales are concerned, the Honda Elevate is doing decent, although, in March 2025, it managed to make an appearance on the list of top selling SUVs, selling 2,475 units, which was a 24 percent decline in its year-on-year sales.
The Honda Elevate is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-step CVT automatic transmission.
