2022 began on a mixed note for car manufacturers in India: while some popular vehicles in the personal vehicle segment saw robust month-on-month growth, overall sales seemed weak compared to January last year.
The mid-sized SUV segment continued to find interest among Indian car buyers, with some models witnessing long waiting periods. Here’s the list of top three best-selling compact SUVs in January 2022:
Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon saw sales of 13,816 units, which was nearly nearly 70 percent higher than the 8,225 units sold in January last year. The compact SUV was also the fourth best-selling name in the passenger vehicle segment, lifting sales for Tata Motors and helping it hold on firmly to the second spot among all manufacturers.
The first car in India to land top Global NCAP safety ratings, this compact SUV is powered by a 1.2 liter Turbocharged Petrol engine and a 1.5 liter Turbocharged Diesel that churn out 120PS and 110PS power, respectively. The Nexon comes with 6-speed transmission and three drive modes.
The Nexon comes with a host of standard safety features including Electronic Traction Control, Roll- over Mitigation, Emergency Brake assist, and Hill Hold Control. The Tata Nexon is priced in the Rs 7.39 lakh-Rs 13.34 lakh range (ex-showroom).
Kia Seltos
With sales of 11,483 units last month, Kia Seltos became the second biggest selling vehicle in the compact SUV segment in January. The South Korean manufacturer had sold 9,869 units of the Seltos in January last year.
The Kia Seltos comes in three engine options: a 1.5-litre petrol, a 1.4-litre turbo petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. These are mated with either a 6-speed manual, 7-speed DCT automatic, or CVT automatic transmission.
Features include 8-speaker Bose sound system, 10.25-in touchscreen infotainment display, 8-in digital MID cluster, Electric sunroof, Cruise control and ventilated seats. The Kia Seltos also comes fitted with 6 airbags and a 360 degree camera.
The Kia Seltos comes at a starting price of Rs 9.95 lakh and goes all the way upto Rs 18.19 lakh.
Mahindra XUV700
Homegrown manufacturer Mahindra sold 4,119 units of the XUV700 in January this year. Among Mahindra vehicles, the XUV700 stood behind the Thar and the XUV300, making more than 20 percent of the company’s overall January sales. The XUV700 has been witnessing heavy demand among car buyers, with multiple news reports suggesting more than 80,000 buyers waiting for delivery.
The XUV700 holds a 5-star rating from GNCAP for adults and a 4-star rating for children. The vehicle’s safety features include adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition apart from ESP and ABS. The XUV700 comes priced between Rs 12.95 Lakh and Rs 23.79 lakh (ex-showroom).
