The Vehicle Scrappage Policy is a scheme introduced by the government to reduce pollution by scrapping cars that are more than 15 years old. Recently the scrappage policy got an upgrade stating that personal cars older than 15 years and commercial cars older than 10 years have to be scrapped. For this, the government will offer tax rebates and discounts on new cars if anybody gets their car scrapped.

The Vehicle Scrappage Policy has specified the age of the car when an owner must consider scrapping their car. All private vehicles across India are registered for 15 years. In Delhi NCR, the registration period is 15 years for petrol cars and 10 years for diesel cars. After the initial registration period, the vehicle needs to undergo a fitness test to be re-registered. However, many people choose to scrap their car once the registration period ends. This helps them avoid the hassles of selling an old car while also being able to get some value for their scrap car.

According to the 2024 update, any personal car that is more than 15 years old and commercial car more than 10 years old need to be scrapped. If the vehicle fails a fitness test or contributes to high emissions, it may be scrapped earlier.

Only authorized dealers that provide an official scrapping certificate should be chosen for your car scrapping.
