Generally, March is a good month for the Indian car market because many salaried individuals choose to show their vehicle purchases as expenses to get tax benefits. In the game since 2005, the hatchback has been the face of an ideal hatchback for Indian preferences. It is more spacious than all its rivals, packs enough comfort, and delivers a fantastic performance while delivering an appealing mileage. While all this makes the Swift a favourite family hatchback, its responsive handling and peppy engine keep it popular among driving enthusiasts. Tata Punch

Tata Punch has been a great hit in India, leading a glorious streak since day one in the market. While its revolutionising success drew tough competition in the form of the Maruti Fronx and Hyundai Exter, the Punch is still going on strong and has established itself as the best-selling Tata car. This time around, Punch sold 17,714 units, and while this was only 1 percent year-on-year growth, the Indian compact SUV comfortably made it to the top 10 selling cars. While the head-turning macho appeal of the Punch makes it look bigger than it is, its formidable body makes it one of the safest cars in India. Meanwhile, on the inside, the Indian compact SUV simulates the ambience of larger SUVs. The Punch has a broader reach as compared to its rivals because it’s available in petrol-powered and CNG-powered variants, and then there is the Tata Punch EV, which is the most value-for-money EV under Rs. 15 lakh.
The ICE variants come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Maruti Suzuki Brezza

While the latest compact SUV, Maruti Fronx, has turned out to be a great success, it is the veteran Maruti Brezza which has been keeping its brand strong in the game for a long time. As a matter of fact, the Maruti Brezza is the longest-running compact SUV as of now and a massive success as far as sales are concerned. Last month, the Maruti Brezza collected sales of 16,546 units, and with 13 percent growth in year-on-year sales, the popular compact SUV outsold its arch-riva, the Tata Nexon. Considering the space for five passengers, the comfort level of the seats, and the refinement and frugality of powertrains, the Brezza comes in as an appealing all-around package. Additionally, what the Brezza brings is exceptional reliability and magnificent resale value.
Maruti offers the Brezza with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Tata Nexon

Following the Maruti Brezza closely is its arch-rival, Tata Nexon, with sales of 16,366 units in March 2025. With such sales, the Indian compact SUV gained a 16 percent growth over the 16,366 units it sold during the same month last year. The Nexon is a special car for not only Tata Motors but also for the entire nation. It is because it was the first car to score a full 5-star rating in the Global NCAP safety test, which set higher safety standards for the industry. All the same, the Nexon is not just about safety, as it offers an appealing design, segment-leading ride comfort, and exciting performance. With these traits, Nexon delivers a fascinating value for its price, and this is what keeps it strong amidst the ever-rising competition.
In terms of mechanicals, the Nexon is available with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed AMT. Maruti Suzuki Dzire

Even though the sedan segment is ailing, the popularity of the Maruti Dzire is unfazed. The best-selling sedan in India, the Maruti Dzire benefits from its time-tested reliability, offering more space than rivals, and its appeal as a fuel-efficient cab. Yes, like the Maruti Wagon R, the Dzire is an overwhelming favourite of cab companies, thanks to its fantastic mileage and low maintenance cost. As far as sales are concerned, the Dzire usually emerges as one of the best-selling cars. Last month was no different. In March 2025, the Dzire sold 15,460 units, and while this was a 3 percent decline in sales compared to the sales it did in the same month last year, it comfortably outsold all its rivals by a big margin.
The latest Maruti Dzire is powered by the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine from the Maruti Swift. This engine delivers a mileage of 24.79 km/l with a petrol-manual powertrain, 25.71 km/l from a petrol-AMT powertrain, and 33.73 km/kg on CNG, which is available with only manual transmission.
Mahindra Scorpio

One of the longest-running and most iconic cars in India, the Mahindra Scorpio is one of a kind. Moreover, it is living proof that while comfort-oriented SUVs are in high demand, many buyers still put their money on conventionally designed, sturdy and durable SUVs. The undying love for Scorpio drove Mahindra to expand its lineup a few years ago. Today, Mahindra sells two SUVs under the Scorpio badge. One is the evergreen Scorpio Classic, and the other is the even more capable Scorpio N, which turned out to be a ground-breaking success. Last month, both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N collectively sold 13,913 units, and while this was an 8 percent decline in its year-on-year sales, it is the only Mahindra car to reach the list of best-selling cars.
As far as engines are concerned, the Scorpio Classic comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, the Scorpio N is powered by the same 2-litre diesel engine in two different tunes and a 2-litre turbo petrol engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, while the more powerful diesel engine and the petrol engine also get the option of a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx

The best-selling car of February 2025, Maruti Fronx, dropped to the tenth spot on the list in March 2025. Nonetheless, it is still one of the best-selling cars, which is a big deal, considering the size of the Indian car market. The Fronx sold 13,669 units in March 2025, which gave it a 9 percent growth over the 12,531 units it sold in the same month of the previous year. The Fronx is based on the iconic Maruti Baleno. Combining the success formula of the Baleno with the coveted SUV body type, the Fronx instantly connected with the masses after its launch in 2023. Since it is based on the Baleno, the Fronx carries similar interiors, features, and even most design elements. Moreover, its price does not differ much from that of the Baleno, especially in lower variants, making it an extremely appealing Maruti compact SUV.
Maruti has equipped the Fronx with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox comes with both engines, while there is a 5-speed AMT for the NA engine and a 6-speed AT for the turbo engine. Like most Maruti cars, the Fronx is also available in CNG variants that come with a 5-speed manual transmission and deliver a mileage of 28.51 km/kg.
